A Bridge Too Far tried using the same formula and just plain missed. Maybe it also helped that the good guys won that it was a much better film, and was very entertaining. The Longest Day was also based on a Cornelius Ryan book, but that one worked with largely the same formula - again, famous actors at the time but in roles that actually fit them - including one, British actor Richard Todd, who on D-Day really was on the real commando team that captured the Orne Bridge. But the casting was absolutely awful, dumping every A list actor at the time, good or bad, into the film with no regard as to whether they actually fit (Gene Hackman as a Polish general? What?! Ryan O'Neal? In anything?), the acting was terrible, it was too long and it was frankly pretty boring despite a lot a battle scenes.

There are parts that are good - the paratroop drop to me is one of the best scenes in a war movie ever filmed (that's 2 minutes out of a 3 hour movie). Grave of the Fireflies received critical acclaim and has been ranked as one of the greatest war films of all time and has been recognized as a major work of Japanese animation. Set in the city of Kobe, Japan, the film tells the story of two siblings, Seita and Setsuko, and their desperate struggle to survive during the final months of the Second World War. The film stars Tsutomu Tatsumi, Ayano Shiraishi, Yoshiko Shinohara and Akemi Yamaguchi. The film would go on to receive four Academy Award nominations, including for Best Picture and. Also directed by Clint Eastwood, this film depicts the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers defending the island as told through their own letters. It was written and directed by Isao Takahata, and animated by Studio Ghibli for the story's publisher Shinchosha Publishing (making it the only Studio Ghibli film under Tokuma Shoten ownership that had no involvement from them). Letters from Iwo Jima is the 2006 companion film to Flags of Our Fathers. Much is made of patriotism, and the smallest complaining in the ranks is grounds for swift, harsh punishment. Letters from Iwo Jima explores the imperial pathology of the time, expected to be absorbed without question by all citizens and soldiers. Grave of the Fireflies (Japanese: 火垂るの墓, Hepburn: Hotaru no Haka) is a 1988 Japanese animated war tragedy film based on the 1967 semi-autobiographical short story of the same name by Akiyuki Nosaka. It is about the impact of the war on two children in Kobe, Japan. The story of the battle of Iwo Jima between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II, as told from the perspective of the Japanese who fought it. One 'war' movie (not military) I would suggest if you have yet to see it is Grave of the Fireflies.

It was awful, so I stopped watching after about 30 mins. And as wonderful as the Letters from Iwo Jima poster is, the movie has such a quiet release as of current that its a lot harder to get them for something that no one knows is even out.
